We added 70 Sites to the Sharepoint Design Gallery Inventory.  This takes us up to 715 sites and into the number two slot for Sharepoint Design sites.

For once, I am not going to mention features and usability which is our real competitive advantage.  We do a few other things that make our inventory a better place to get your insight and examples.  First, we validate the organization is actually using Sharepoint in their online environment.  It doesn't really count if you're using Sharepoint as a collaborative tool internally and using HTML or .Net externally.  That's not what you want to see in a Sharepoint Site Showcase.  Second, we actually validate the sites to ensure they are still using Sharepoint and are online.  Some of our competitors list dead or broken links which isn't the best idea.  Finally, we only list sites that provide an English version.  This is about being arrogant but having the ability to read the information provides better metadata like location, description, and classification.  We don't want to guess at these items which allow us to provide better information to you.

There seems to be three basic inventories of Sharepoint sites out on the web today. Each of these sites take a different approach in presenting the information to you. We have put together a side by side comparison of each of these sites based on the inventory as well as the business functionality provided.  Obviously, our review will be slightly slanted towards the Sharepoint Design Gallery.  Take a look at the comparison between WSS-Demo, Top Sharepoint, and the Sharepoint Design Gallery.

Our Strengths Include:

  • Quantity of Sites
  • Metadata Captured for each site
  • Multiple Ways in which to Review the data
  • Expert and End User Reviews
  • Interactive Site Search

One of the coolest features we see on other Web Design sites is where they showcase related or similar sites based on the metadata collected.  This weekend, we took the time to implement the same concept in the Sharepoint Design Gallery.  Each site is compared to the entire inventory of sites to find the closest three sites.  Sites are ranked based on similar industries, product lines, tags, and several other metadata fields.

Every week we tweet a lot of interesting stuff highlighting great content that we find on the web that can be of interest to Sharepoint designers, developers, and managers.  The best way to keep track of our tweets is simply to follow us on Twitter, however, in case you missed some here's a quick and useful compilation of the best tweets that we found this past week.
